Kerianne Hermann Fifteen-year-old Kelly is just like every other sophomore in high school. She loves her friends, enjoys playing on her school’s lacrosse team and does her homework before she goes to be every night. Once the weekend comes and school is out, everything changes. She goes to a cool party hosted by a good-looking quarterback. She drinks, her friends are doing it so why not? Then all of her friends sneak off with boys. Kelly is alone, drunk and vulnerable. When the quarterback walks over and flirts with her she is elated.When he suggests going to another room though, she is nervous, but she goes with him. She sees this happen all the time in movies, and her friends are doing it so how wrong could it be? When she’s home and alone with her own thoughts, she realizes the mistake she has made. Unfortunately this happens to many young girls everyday. All across America girls are being pressured by the media and their peers to have sex. Studies show that by the ag e of twenty, 75 percent of Americans have lost their virginity.In many high schools – and an increasing number of junior highs- virginity is regarded as an embarrassing vestige of childhood, to be disposed of as quickly as possible. (Garity 768-771). Peer pressure is something everyone has to deal with at some point in their life. It can influence the way you dress, the music you listen to, what clubs you join, and even your choices regarding sex. â€Å"The American Public Health Association,† reports Psychology Today, â€Å"did a study and found that one of the biggest reasons that teenagers have sex is because they think their peers are also having sex†. Girls think because everyone else is doing it, they should do it too. â€Å"[A factor] I think, is that very little in our culture encourages independent thinking† says Steve Lopez. The most lurid elements of each medium now dominate pop culture, and the incessant, pounding message, directed primarily at young people, is that it’s all about sex. † (776-778) The media has been influencing young people’s choices since advertisers realized how naive young people can be.When girls look at an ad for the clothing store Hollister, all they see are half-naked beautiful people having the times of their lives and they think that’s reality. It most certainly is not. â€Å" I’ve lived long enough to know that what I see is a marketing technique,† explains Joyce Garity, â€Å"A moment after the photo session was over, the beautiful room was dismantled, and the models moved onto their next job. Later, the technicians took over the task of doctoring the photograph until it reached full-blown fantasy proportions. (768-771). The media glorifies teen sex. Take a look at teen mom, these girls are praised for getting pregnant at sixteen years old, they got a lot of money and fame out of it. Why wouldn’t other girls want to do the same thing? According to the American Social Health Association, â€Å"Teenagers that watch sexual content in the media are more likely to overestimate the amount of sex their friends and acquaintances are having. They are also more likely to feel permissive of sexual activity and multiple partners. (Family) The media will forever influence people’s thoughts on things to buy, things to wear, how to act and every other social aspect of life. Girls need to be taught that this is not reality. It’s a fake world and what they don’t show you are the consequences of these actions. Nothing is perfect, there is no â€Å"utopia† that exists, these things may look fun and carefree but they have consequences. Joyce Garity asked a young girl Elaine, who was pregnant and living in her home, why she never used birth control. Elaine blushed and stammered. â€Å"Birth control,† she finally got out â€Å"was ‘embarrassing’.It wasn’t ‘romantic’. You couldn’t be really passionate,† she explained â€Å"and worry about birth control at the same time. † (Garity 768-771) Girls see the basic side of sex, which is essentially, just sex. What they don’t think about is unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, like AIDS which is fatal. They definitely don’t think about the brutality of rape. Gail Abarbanel , director of the Rape Treatment Center in Santa Monica, California says 50% of rape victims are eighteen or younger, and the rapists are acquaintences 80% of the time. Lopez 776-778). Girls are having sex and they think that â€Å"it wont happen to them† but it most certainly will if they don’t take the right precautions. Young people need to be educated about the dangers of unprotected sex before something bad happens to them. The best defense against STDs is knowledge. â€Å"Studies have shown that teenagers who are equipped with the education they need to protect themselves are more likely to engage in protective behaviors during sex. † (Family).The point of being educated about sex isn’t to scare people away from it, or mark it as forbidden, but to make sure teenagers know everything before they make their decision on whether or not to engage in sexual activity. If a person can think independently for themselves, they can make the right decisions for who they are. Teenagers are so heavily influence by the media and their peers that they forget they can do this. Teen sex isn’t the problem, a lack of education is. Teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases are a growing epidemic in this country.The children today are our future, they need to know how to make the right decisions for themselves or they will never understand how big of a problem this is. The Dante Club begins with the murder of fictional Chief Justice Judge Healey, who had avoided taking a position to stop or support the escaped slaves of the South. Found by his chambermaid near a white flag atop a short wooden staff, Healey had been hit in the head and then left in his garden to be eaten alive by strategically placed maggots and stung by hornets. Holmes, who examines the body for the police, recognizes the correlation between the murder and the punishments seen in Dante's Inferno.Then Reverend Talbot, who was paid by the Harvard Corporation to write against Dante, was found dead in an underground cemetery, buried up to his waist upside down, his feet burnt. Members of the Dante Club, a group of poets translating The Divine Comedy from Italian into English, notice the parallels between the murders and the punishments detailed in Dante's Inferno. The club, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. , and James Russell Lowell, sets out to solve th e murders, fearing that the truth will ruin Dante's burgeoning reputation in America, thus making their translation a failure.Then, Phineas Jennison, both a wealthy contributor to the Harvard Corporation and friend to the translators (a â€Å"schismatic†), is sliced open exactly down the middle—all killed in extreme fashion and undeniable resemblance to the punishments of people in Dante's Inferno. Eventually, the murderer is discovered to be a former Civil War Soldier Dan Teal, a man who worked at Ticknor and Fields. Driven partly mad by the trauma of his war experiences, Teal hears Dante Club member George Washington Greene giving sermons on Dante, and becomes convinced that Dante alone understood the need for perfect justice in the world.With protecting Dante as his sole motivation, Teal takes it upon himself to release Hell's punishments as indicated by Dante, in order to purify the city. Teal finds each of his victims when learning of their involvement in the stop ping of the translations, which become their respective sins. The club eventually tries to capture him, with the aid of Boston's first African-American policeman Nicholas Rey, the only other person who saw the connection, while attempting to punish Harvard Treasurer Dr. Manning and Pliny Mead (â€Å"the traitors†). Mead was a student of the Dante course who helped betray his eacher by cooperating with Manning. He later fled when the club attempted to punish him for his involvement in stopping the translation of the Inferno. They later encounter him as he tries to round up the translators, to punish them for not embracing his â€Å"work. † Dr. Manning—saved by Longfellow, Holmes, Rey, Lowell, and Fields—realizes the situation as he recovered from his attempted punishment of being buried naked in ice. He sees Teal on the street with a gun to Longfellow, and Manning ends the murderer's life, thus returning the city to normal.

Albert Camus 8th January 1955 The novel The Outsider establishes a being that is a Nomad or existential in a sense of the society he lives in and the wandering on the cliff beside the sea of introversion and poignancy. Meursault is commonly misunderstood and is regarded as a reject. Furthermore he refuses to lie. A lie is a statement made by someone, in the expectation that the hearers may believe it. In the case of the human heart saying more than one feels, Meursault conforms to the existential presuppositions; this is regarding reality as the state of being, the truth, often unheard of in politics and society. Consequently society feels threatened, by Meursaults refusal to satisfy the feelings of others by showing little remorse for his mothers death. His indifference leads him to be condemned by a trial. In the early stages of the book Meursault is seen as an adverse individual towards society, one who speaks his consciousness. Camus creates a paradoxical character against the normality of society, which brings out stark differences through the use of Meursaults ability to state facts. This narrative effect can be seen from the opening passage, Mother died today. Or maybe yesterday; I dont know. I had a telegram from home: Mother passed away. Funeral tomorrow. Yours sincerely. That doesnt mean anything. It may have been yesterday. We see Meursaults inability to conform to humanity in the event of his mothers death, and the use of the short sentence stating quality. He merely retells the dubious facts of her death as mundane as the telegram had stated it. I even had the impression that this dead body in lying there among them, didnt mean anything to them. Referring to his mother to a dead body shows little emotion. Throughout the ordeal of attending the funeral, Meursault treats it with the same destitution of emotion. Conversations are referred to in a chronological order from the catching of the bus to the moment he crawls into bed. Meursault is an anomaly that does not relate directly to others or human experiences, like emotion, affection or love. She asked me again if I love her. I replied much before, that her question meant nothing or next to nothing, but I supposed I didnt. Curious she then asks Suppose another girl had asked you to marry her- mean a girl you liked in the same way as you like me- would you of said yes to her too? He replies with honesty Naturally Meursault enjoys the physical side of his relationship, he likes to drink smoke swim and have sex. When Marie leaves, he lies in bed and tries to get the salty smell of her hair from the pillow. All these things can be pertained. All the secondary characters, contrast to Meursault. Raymond shows anger, Marie shows passion and Salamano shows possessiveness, all these characteristics show that Meursault is detached from society. Albert Camus chose the constituent of heat and sunlight as a metaphor of Meursaults uncorroborated deiscomfort with society. Both of these elements affect Meursault, I could feel my forehead swelling up under the sun. The heat was pushing full against me I set me teeth, closed my fists in my trouser pockets and tensed my whole body in defiance of the sun and of the drunken haze it was pouring into me.
